Fair optimism on year-ahead prospects for state of Indian economy: RBI

New Delhi: 2023/12/12:  India’s consumer confidence touched a four-year high in September this year, continuing its path to recovery following a brief pause in July. The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) bi-monthly consumer confidence survey in November reveals.

The survey found respondents remained fairly optimistic on the year-ahead prospects for general economic situation, employment, income and spending.

The confidence on general economic and employment conditions were, however, a shade lower vis-a-vis the previous survey, which led to a moderation of the future expectations index (FEI) within the positive terrain.

The current situation index remained unchanged at 92.2 in November from the previous round. It had reached a four-year high on the back of respondents’ better assessment of current general economic situation and employment conditions in September this year.

Household’s assessment of current earnings reached its highest level since July 2019 and expectations for future income also improved further. However, consumers retained negative sentiments on both current and future price conditions, the survey found.

The latest round of the survey was conducted during November 2-11, covering 6,082 respondents, with female respondents accounting for 52.8 per cent of the sample.

The future expectations index (FEI) also reached a four- year high in the latest survey round, it added.
